2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games – Athens, Greece

Every four years, Special Olympics athletes from around the world gather for the World Summer Games. The 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games will be held in Athens, Greece from June 25 – July 4, 2011.

Over 7,500 athletes from approximately 185 countries will compete in 22 Olympic-type sports. These Games are also highlighted by grand-scale Opening and Closing Ceremonies and a vast array of cultural, social and health-related events and services for the participants, volunteers and supporters.

Special Olympics Oregon will be sending a delegation of 6 athletes, 6 coaches and 1 staff as part of Special Olympics Team USA. Congratulations to all who were selected.  Please see list below.

In addition, Sergeant Joel Goodwin, Corvallis Police Department and LETR Executive Council Chair, will represent Oregon on the 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg team that will relay the Flame of Hope through Greece from June 7 to June 27 finishing in Athens for Opening Ceremonies.

  • Mason Coad, Portland - GOLD in 400m Freestyle; 4th Place in 800m Freestyle; GOLD in 1500m Freestyle; GOLD in 4x100m Freestyle Relay
  • Kevin Zwart, Salem - GOLD in 400m Freestyle; GOLD in 800m Freestyle; GOLD in 1500m Freestyle; GOLD in 4x100m Freestyle Relay

Athletics –

  • Christie Clark, Portland - BRONZE in 800m Run, 5th Place in 1500m Run, SILVER 4x400 Relay
  • Martin Fulcher, McMinnville - 5th Place in 1500m Run, 4th Place in Long Jump, SILVER in 4x400 Relay

 

Bowling –

  • Mitchell Isham, McMinnville - 5th Place in Singles; 5th Place in Doubles, 4th Place in Team
  • Jillian Smalley, Hermiston - SILVER in Singles, 6th Place in Doubles, 4th Place in Team
